Like monuments and gravestones, this issue honors and preserves the memories of three courageous Porter County heroes and pioneers: Charles Osborn, a Quaker minister and fierce advocate for the abolition of slavery; Dr. Almira Fifield, an early graduate of the nation’s first women’s medical school; and Daniel Bruce, Porter County’s only known resident to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. About the ImageThe Mockler Collection (highlighted in the issue) includes thirty Grand Army of the Republic postcards featuring patriotic post-Civil War scenes that commemorate Decoration Day (now known as Memorial Day). Steve Mockler’s duties with the David D. Porter Camp 116 of Sons of Union Veterans include preserving and restoring gravestone markers from local cemeteries. Over the years, he has helped repair much of the damage caused by vandalism in the middle of the last century.
