Exhibit Series Kicks Off with Life WorkOur newest exhibit, Life Work: The Artists Hazel & Vin Hannell, maps the couple’s creative paths from Chicago to Furnessville, highlighting their prolific contributions across multiple media and their lasting impact as regional artists of the mid-twentieth century. Life Work is the first of several exhibits in a county-wide exhibit series called, Vin & Hazel Hannell: Creativity, Community, Conservation. Between May and October 2025, community partners will collectively illustrate the life and influence of Hazel and Vin Hannell through exhibitions and educational programs. The series officially kicks off on Saturday, June 21, from 3-5p. Join series partners at the PoCo Muse for a reception with light refreshments.

P.S. The last day to see Hazel’s Mexico Watercolors is Thursday, June 19. Replacing the exhibit in the Robert Cain Gallery is a selection of works by Vin Hannell of farm scenes in Porter County from the collection of John Cain.

Life Work: The Artists Hazel & Vin HannellMay 9 through October 26, 2025Life Work traces the artistic journeys of Hazel and Vin Hannell, from early life to their move to Porter County’s Furnessville and beyond. Known for their passion, generosity, and versatility across media—sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, and pottery—the Hannells became iconic regional artists of the mid-twentieth century. This exhibition is part of a year-long community collaboration celebrating their legacy, with events hosted by the Art Barn School of Art, Chesterton Art Center, Pines Village Retirement Communities, and the Westchester Township History Museum. Hazel’s Mexico WatercolorsMay 9 through June 19, 2025View a selection of vibrant watercolors that capture Hazel Hannell’s winters in Ajijic, Mexico during the 1980s, where she painted alongside fellow artists Harriet Rex Smith, Jan Sullivan, and Elizabeth Murray. Inspired by the new landscape, Hannell’s style grew bolder and more expressive, marked by vivid colors and looser brushwork. Though distinct from her Indiana scenes, these works maintain her signature focus on nature and architecture. From moody mountains to abstract florals, this lesser-known chapter of her career reveals an adventurous and evolving artist still rooted in her unique vision. Robert Cain Gallery |
