The PoCo Muse could not function without a passionate and dedicated volunteer base. Volunteers perform a variety of tasks. Whether it’s assembling mailings, researching local history, or leading field trip tours, there are opportunities for everyone. Administrative volunteers provide various kinds of clerical assistance to the PoCo Muse staff. Volunteers who serve in this role help with general office functions such as filing, bulk mailings, data entry and a variety of other tasks as needed.
Requirements: Interpersonal skills, expert organization, speed, accuracy and attention to detail. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel and keyboarding skills of 30+ words per minute a plus.
Collections volunteers help staff organize, document, and preserve PoCo Muse artifacts in areas that are rarely made available to the public.
Requirements: Attention to detail, willingness to work in teams and individually, knowledge of Past Perfect Software a plus.
Guides bring local history to life for the school-aged children who visit the PoCo Muse annually. Information is available on Porter County’s history and special training can be arranged through the Visitor Experience Associate to become a PoCo Muse expert.
Requirements: Personable, ability to speak in front of groups of 5-30 people.
Museum Experience DOCENT
Docents interact with PoCo Muse visitors who seek an enhanced museum experience. Volunteers serving in this area are encouraged to listen intently in order to share stories or provide insight that caters to each visitor’s interests. Similar to our tour guide training, information and guidance is provided through the Visitor Experience Associate.
